It took about four months to create my last piece, Furnace of Life, but this time I have imposed a six week time limit on getting "No Place to Call Home" out. Now considering that I scrapped six other compositions before I created what I did do, I really have quite a bit of material I can call on for future music. This is the case with No Place to Call Home. I have taken the theme from one of my scrapped compositions to use in this one. It is working out very well. It is a darker, more foreboding piece than other things I've written. I think you'll really enjoy it. but here's the thing, I will have it released on time, but I'm very nervous about letting it go! I have received so many wonderful comments and new supporters that I am hoping that they will not be let down when they hear this newer work. So yes, it will be released on time, but certainly it has become a test of my nerve. Also, with this video I will be displaying photographs instead of actual moving video. So I'm really feeling that I have to step up my game musically and really create something that is very powerful and dramatic. There are two weeks left before the release date and the clock is ticking…

Furnace of Life (Sun video) has Finally Been Released!!
The last two months of 2013 have been crazy. It started in October. I'm going along writing the music for Furnace of Life, the Sun video, and I find that the music is just too slow and, well sad. So in we go to November and I notice I seem to be coming down with a cold. A week later I'm in my doctor's office and he's telling me I have an infection. So I take the meds and get better. Thanksgiving comes around and I'm in the ER. Stronger meds prescribed. Two weeks later, still fighting this. Working away as furiously as I can to get the music written. Spent the whole Christmas holiday in and out of bed. Went back to the doctor. He tells me that this round of antibiotics will kill anything. I think it's working, 5 more doses to go. Anyway, in a 4 day period I complete the mixdown and mastering and it's out the door. Such a relief! On to the next video, "No Place to Call Home" (Mercury)

The new era in music...
It's incredible how things have changed over the years in music. There was the time when the musicians goal was to get signed to a major label. Today however, independent musicians are developing substantial careers completely on their own. With technology leveling the playing field this is really possible. Publicizing yourself on the Internet through such channels as social media are giving independent musicians the opportunity to reach out to thousands and even millions of people. There was also a day when the only way to get recorded was to spend big money in a recording studio. Now it is possible for musicians to record themselves using computer-based technology and software. No longer under the control of major corporations, they are able to express their creativity in their own way, so music has blossomed in ways that once could only be imagined.
Of course this comes with some big responsibilities for the musicians who have the goal to be successful on their own. They must have or develop a real sense of professionalism, a genuine no-nonsense attitude. Whether they rise or fall will largely be in their own hands. They will need to either have or acquire a significant amount of business acumen or they will find themselves dis-organized and out of business. They will need to have a much more workingman's approach to music and come to understand that they can have a good living but may not be largely wealthy.
Today some of the biggest stars in music are finding out that they do not have the same draw that they once had. That CD sales are way down. With the trend towards downloading music, CDs are not purchased as much anymore. This is great for independent musicians who don't have to finance large inventories of physical product. Even musical merchandise such as T-shirts can be sent to companies who can make and distribute them as they are ordered. So while the challenge of being an independent musician can seem daunting, for those who are willing to pay their dues, so to speak, a real, true, stable career in music is possible.
